Onus Playhouse presents Dark Lullaby, an episodic musical podcast premiering November 1st

How do you steel yourself against a random universe that seems determined to turn you into an accidental killing machine? Onus Playhouse attempts to answer that question with Dark Lullaby, the Serene Dominic musical originally directed for the stage by Sheri Amourr for four performances in downtown Phoenix in 2018.

Between then, the pandemic and now, Dominic created the Onus Playhouse podcast as a social distancing safe theater experience. Its first production was actually the FIRST-ever episodic musical podcast, “All Is Forgiven” and now for its third season, Onus Playhouse is reviving “Dark Lullaby,” which lends itself even more to the radio play format. This production also stars Dayna Renee Donovan, Joobs, Ernesto Moncada, Kristen Saggau, Serene Dominic and of course San Jacinto Prison Band who reprise their original role as the musical’s pit band. There will be seven episodes in all, released weekly from November 1 to December 13. If you prefer binging them all at once, you will be able to in…yes, seven weeks.

Episode 1 begins in the year 1989 at San Jacinto Federal Prison, which periodically invites troubled teens from Lymon Juvenile Detention Facility to listen to Death Row prisoners’ hard luck stories in an attempt to discourage them from a life of crime. And music. Enter Tom Reynolds, a once-gainfully employed guitar player now fronting a death row prison band. Reynolds recounts how trying to get to the West Coast to reunite with his actress girlfriend Joanna, led to a string of accidental murders.

Songs featured in episode 1: “San Jacinto Death Row Prison Band,” “Titillation” and “You’re Gonna Know All About Me.”
